What Exactly Are Wiring Cables?

Wiring cables transport energy. They are part of an electrical circuit or network and connect the power source to the consumer. These cables consist of one or more individually insulated conductors. A single insulated conductor is called a core, and a core cable consists of a single insulated conductor. In standard installations, copper is always used as the conductor material. Cables that are particularly resistant and robust against environmental influences, such as those laid underwater or underground, are referred to as power cables.

Only specific types of cables are approved for certain connections. Electrical wires and cables are labeled with letters and numbers. Currently, two classification systems are in use: a national system and an internationally harmonized system.

What Types of Wiring Cables Are Available?

Here is an overview of the different types of cables, including their applications, properties, and advantages:

Core Cable (Aderleitung)

Applications:
Dry rooms, distribution and control systems, conduits, on and under plaster, closed installation channels, devices, switchgear, distributors, in and on lights, buildings, asset concentration areas, and transportation systems.

Properties:
Core cables are typically designed for fixed installation and consist of a single rigid conductor with standard cross-sections of 1.5 mm² or 2.5 mm², featuring appropriate color-coded insulation. Common types are labeled H05V-U or H07V-U.

Advantages:
Core cables are flexible, as individual conductors can be extended or replaced later if needed. Additionally, flexible core cables offer excellent stability and durability.

Switching Wire (Schaltdraht)

Applications:
Devices, modules, telecommunications systems for voice and signal transmission, switching cabinets, amplifier and selector racks, measuring instruments, telephone exchanges, central clock systems, information processing devices, on and under plaster.

Properties:
Classic switching wires consist of a single, solid, and typically rigid conductor. However, some switching wires are stranded wires, meaning they are made up of multiple thin wires twisted together. This makes them more flexible, less prone to cable breakage and material fatigue—but also more complex to manufacture and therefore more expensive.

Advantages:
Switching wires are cost-effective, easy to handle, and simple to solder, clamp, wrap, and weld.
